27 Students. 24 Hours. 3 Rules. ONE WINNER!

By Karolina Manko, Education Assistant 06.16.14

Our annual Burns Film Challenge was last weekend and our Media Arts Lab flooded with teams of high school students eager to try their hand at competitive movie-making. Kicking off at 5:00 pm on Friday, the participants had twenty-four hours to script, story-board, shoot, and edit their movies! In order to keep things fair (and to ensure that no group arrived with a pre-planned idea) each team had to fulfill three specific requirements:

1. Include a “spine scene” *

2. Include at least one “slow motion” or “sped up” scene.

3. Include at least one of three, specific and recognizable movie quotes.**

All submissions were due in by 5:00 pm on Saturday and the event wrapped up with a 7:00 pm screening of all the films!

Check out this year’s winner, Playgrounds, a six minute short film about the unforgettable “last hurrah” of a group of friends. The film was created by Joe Blank, Max Galassi, Jonah Gelfand, and Max Shepardson. Congratulations guys, jobs well done! (And a big round of applause to all of this year’s participating filmmakers for their creative dedication!)

*Spine Scene – A scene that is revisited throughout the length of a film. (I.e.: An interrogation that flashes back to how things got to this point; or an important event that has sent characters in different directions.)
