A Student Screening That's Out of this World!

By Karolina Manko, Education Assistant 02.26.15

This morning 250 students from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY came to the JBFC theater for a Q&A with a very special alumnus. Ron Garan is a decorated fighter pilot, aquanaut, social entrepreneur, and he's the only NASA astronaut from Westchester County. He's spent 178 days in space (71 million miles in orbit) and recently wrote a book, The Orbital PerspectiveThis morning Ron shared his interactive, multi-media presentation with the students, encouraging them to “look skyward, earthward, and forward.”

Joining Ron on the stage was recent JBFC Filmmaker-in-Residence, Guy Reid. Guy is one of the founders of the Planetary Collective, a creative organization dedicated to Worldview Interruption (redefining perceptions of, and engagement with, our planet.) Planetary Collective's debut short film, Overview features interviews with various environmentally conscious field-experts, including Ron Garan. Both Guy and Ron share a vision for an international effort to use the orbital perspective to inspire positive social and environmental action. The Q&A was moderated by JBFC Founder and former Executive Director, Steve Apkon.
