Pursuing a career in the arts is a practical and creative challenge, and some of the many ways we fulfill our commitment to making film a vibrant part of the community are through The Valentine and Clark Emerging Artist Fellowship, the Sally Burns Shenkman Woman Filmmaker Fellowship, and our Creative Culture Maker positions.
These unique opportunities are available to aspiring media makers. Fellows are granted free and open access to all Media Arts Lab equipment and facilities, while Makers enjoy access to the Lab's resources during regular business hours. The fellowships include a financial stipend, and offer participants the time and resources necessary to work on a media project of their choice. All fellows are also deeply involved in our education programs at the Lab and beyond, including our Creative Culture Initiative, which gathers together a community of area filmmakers for feedback, support, and knowledge sharing. Most fellows work as teaching assistants in our Lab courses and are involved in various JBFC school partnerships and outreach initiatives. Both fellowships culminate in a public presentation of the artists' completed projects. Makers pay a flat fee to participate in Creative Culture, and enjoy all of the same peer sharing and mentorship benefits as Fellows.
Former Creative Culture participants have come from a variety of backgrounds, and their work has covered an impressive scope of genre and style-from documentary and narrative, to animation and experimental film. To learn more about former Fellows and their work, check out our spotlights on Lucy Adams, Emily Ann Hoffman, and Leah Galant.
