Hair Love, an Oscar®-winning animated short film from Matthew A. Cherry, tells the heartfelt story of an African American father learning to do his daughter’s hair for the first time.
Why JBFC Kids Curator Emily Ohara (@TeachEmFilm) recommends it:
A dad dives head first into the world of hair when his daughter’s own attempts end up in knots and flying strays. The father’s approach is one of pure comedy, featuring a literal showdown with hair-- a character in its own right. The story could have easily ended in a nice simple way, but Hair Love goes deeper, revealing how hairdos are another way to express one’s love.
Matthew A. Cherry was inspired to make the story based on this video of a dad trying to do his daughter’s hair.
Take it Further:
Learn how to braid with three strings! Once you feel comfortable, braid string, someone else’s hair, or even dough before it goes into the oven.
