The Stars Align for a Good Cause

What do Meryl Streep, Jodi Foster, and Jonathan Demme have in common (besides incredible talent)? A table at this year’s JBFC Anniversary Celebration! That’s right; this year’s event was as JBFC-chic as ever. Filmmakers, actors, screenwriters, and industry-professionals came together under our fancy anniversary tent to celebrate our guest-of-honor (and JBFC Board member), Jonathan Demme, for his unwavering dedication to powerful storytelling. Saturday night was particularly spectacular: vintage Edison-bulbs canopied the tent; a live band entertained the guests; Jodi Foster gave a heartfelt speech; and Meryl Streep presented Jonathan Demme with the Vision Award to a round of lively and genuine applause. It was an unforgettable evening- one we’re still buzzing about!

The JBFC Anniversary Celebration is always a special event, partly because of its precedent of style and entertainment, but also because it is our biggest fundraiser of the year. The money raised that evening goes on to fund many of our film and education programs and provides vital funding for students who otherwise could not participate in our amazing programs. Besides being exciting and fun, the Anniversary Celebration is also incredibly important. It gives us the resources we need in order to continue our mission of teaching literacy for a visual culture. The thousands of third graders who fill our Media Arts Lab every year for a taste of See Hear Feel Film; the dozens of underserved schools who participate in our 12-week animation course, Minds in Motion; our Focus on Nature initiatives designed to teach active environmental engagement; our Seeing Stories program for Pre-K through second-graders which aims to provide fundamental instruction in visual storytelling; the multitude of Media Arts Lab classes offered at our state-of-the-art building every semester; and so much more, are all made possible through the generous support of our community of friends and partners.

While it was certainly great fun to get dressed up and to rub elbows with celebrities, this year’s Anniversary Celebration was more important than ever as the demand for our programs continues to rise. Thank you to everyone who made the evening a huge success!
