Week Five: Summer @ the Lab

Grade 3-4

Instructor: Darrel Swann

This week, the 3rd and 4th grade class created an interactive installation with specialist Adam Rokhsar. The students were introduced to Twine, a web-based storytelling software. They created short stories with multiple endings and drew comic-inspired panels to accompany them. These were then uploaded and shared via Twine. During the latter half of the week, the campers had 3 days of animation with specialist Greg Lewis. Focusing on composition and working with Dragonframe, a professional animation software, they created a nautical adventure told through stop motion animation.

Grade 5-6

Instructor: Emily Ohara

Interactive installation was the focal point this week for the 5th and 6th grade class. After a few short warm-up projects, the campers split into small groups and created original melodies and sound effects which were then recorded. They brought these sounds into a program called Max, which helped them create an installation. Depending on where the viewer stands in front of a camera, different camper-created sounds will play. This allows the viewer to control the flow of sound and to compose on-the-spot by moving around the space.

Grade 7-8

Instructor: David Miller

Our 7th and 8th grade campers started the week off with animation, finishing projects they had begun the previous week. These short stop-motion films utilized 3 dimensional sets created from a variety of found materials and focused on distinguishing between action in the foreground and background. Later in the week, the campers worked on two narrative films. One focused on the civil rights struggle of unicorns, while the other revolved around a kid and his time-traveling wrist watch.

Grade 9-10

Instructor: Adam Lamas

Our oldest campers had a busy week as well. After finishing up digital animations started the previous week, the 9th and 10th graders had 4 full days to focus on filmmaking. They conceived, created and edited two narrative films, one a super hero comedy and the other a procedural cop-drama. Toward the end of the week, the campers also began to explore experimental film. They watched and dissected a variety of shorts and are in the process of creating their own.
