Teachers of grades 3-12 are invited to join us for the Image, Sound, and Story Teacher Institute. This three-day/18-hour summer professional development program prepares teachers to lead instruction for the first three projects of the curriculum: "Image," "Sound," and "Story." This exciting and informative visual literacy program will introduce new teachers to the Image, Sound, and Story curriculum and also give more in-depth strategies and skills to returning teachers.

Schedule

August 7, 8, 9 from 9am-3pm

Media Arts Lab, 405 Manville Rd., Pleasantville, NY 10570

Details

Image, Sound, and Story integrates viewing short films and creating media projects into classroom culture and literacy instruction. JBFC faculty will lead the transformative experience, which will provide content, support and practice with technology, special screenings, and creative collaboration. Each grade level curriculum contains distinct and unique content, which will be explored as a group and within grade-based breakout sessions.

The hands-on, interactive professional development experience provides:

  • Modeling instruction for facilitating discussion in viewing media
  • Skill based breakout sessions
  • Best practices for managing small group production activities
  • Resources, tutorials, and structured support for planning and integrating Image, Sound, and Story into existing units of study
  • Project rubrics paired with pre- and post-writing prompts to assess student learning
  • Technical support for capturing and editing audio and video as part of the curriculum
Concurrent with implementation during the 2018-2019 school year, teachers also receive:

  • Individual membership to the Jacob Burns Film Center
  • Monthly in-person or virtual cohort meetings and teacher community gatherings
  • Ongoing support and mentorship from JBFC faculty for technical and curricular implementation
  • Eligibility to participate in professional development workshops for supplemental Image, Sound, and Story projects, such as "Character," "Setting," and "Structure"
“As a teacher, one of the hardest things is finding material to use in your classroom that is fun, engaging, and exciting, but still teaches the standards that are needed in order for student success on tests. The JBFC’s lesson plans seamlessly incorporated viewing, discussion, and creating into the classroom. I am excited to use it with my seventh graders.” - Ariel Siegel, 7th Grade Teacher
